TheHR Specialist – Field Safetyposition (2) ensures that employees of The City of Red Deer have a safe work environment. Coordinates and enhances the many department level corporate safety initiatives of the organization. Advises on department policy and procedure development relevant to safety. Ensures that reported incidents are completed and analyzed to identify trends that may require further corrective action or to make appropriate recommendations. Provides information and stewardship to Health and Safety Committees. Supports maintenance of an effective Health and Safety Management System for the City.

Position 1 – General Portfolio:Will provide Occupational Health and Safety consultation to a variety of City departments to ensure compliance with current OH&S Legislation.

Position 2 – Emergency Services Portfolio:Will provide consultation to the Emergency Services Department to ensure compliance with current OH&S Legislation.

Job Requirements:


Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Eligible for Registration as a Certified Registered Safety Professional Preferred.


Three plus (3+) Years’ work experience in an organization where safety is a significant focus providing expertise in safety committee work, development of safety policy and procedure, and knowledge in facility operations (e.g. equipment, ventilation, lighting and other conditions and materials in the workplace that could affect employee health and safety).

Certified Peer Auditor Certification with AMHSA.

Experience working in an Emergency Services setting would be an asset (Emergency Services portfolio).


In addition to the 9 Core Competencies identified for all of the City of Red Deer the following are specific to this position:

Possession of a valid Alberta Driver’s License.

Thorough understanding of provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

Strong writing skills and ability to develop data into management information.

Strong organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with field staff.

Demonstrated experience in working autonomously, with a minimum of direction.

Good computer skills.

Specific Demands of the Job:

May be exposed to adverse conditions and hazards such as cold, heat, dirty and unsanitary conditions while conducting worksite assessments, audits, inspections or investigations, exposure to chemicals when at worksites that contain hazardous chemicals, and exposure to noise when conducting noise measurements

Hours of Work:80 hours biweekly, Monday to Friday; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; some evenings and weekend work may be required for emergency situations.
